Simple Replay for entire game

description

Request a snapshot at the END of each player turn which can be accessed in replay. No moves need be recorded, just the snapshot of the Unit locations at each Player turn END when the phase advances to the next turns "Basing" phase.

The cost in file size might be manageable if only the unit locations and statuses are recorded. This will make looking back to verify forcepool sizes, and unit locations, and a brief history of the game to cycle through to enjoy the action.

I like this suggestion, although I think I have a solution designed to support the old style replay too. Which is more preferrable?

Well, having put a lot of work into the old replay myself, I understand it's complexity. I like the easy feel to the current tracking of movement of each unit by clicking on the unit and seeing it's moves. But, that is limited, in that moves off the map in unit holders are not tracked, moves such as combining factorable units, and units which left the map loose their move tracking. So, somehow expanding the current structure while allowing for tracking of all unit moves in the current turn. The past turns don't need to be as complex as the current turns replay. Snapshots at the end, with unit holder info intact will probably be enough for keeping track of infomation, and easier on the eyes and patience. I think keeping an END file for each turn would allow full traking of all moves throughout the game, and having limited replay within the savefile would be good enough.

Yep, Eric I think this suggestion is brilliant, the more I think about it. Good job man.

I don't think the full replay is needed. After a turn is over, I seldom go back and check the moves, or view the replay move by move for memories sake. I do often go back and check the units, and statuses in a previous turn, for many reasons. For example, to verify the number of turns an isolation is worth of Leningrad. So, practically, a snapshot is all that is needed. It will actually enhance the replay, if you just cycle through the END phases, giving a quick review of game history. Players can open up the Old Combat phase of Summer 1942 file, to see the moves there, if that was required. They are saved in My Documents anyway. JMHO.
